As part of the Via Padova 2009 initiative, Assab One invited Enzo Umbaca to develop a project connected to the neighbourhood around the association’s premises.

The project was made possible thanks to the collaboration of a number of local businesses and institutions, as well as individual residents who enthusiastically agreed to take part in the initiative, offering their personal experiences of the neighbourhood, their knowledge and even their homes.

The project

Enzo Umbaca brought the local community together though the design of a new multi-national flag, which flew over the forgotten Monument to those Lost at Sea, next to the one made by local children who enriched their version with their imagination and dreams. The inauguration included a ceremonial raising of the flags accompanied by a trumpet call played by the Via Padova orchestra. A video of the ceremony and a small printed reproduction of the flags were presented at the Triennale. The Lost at Sea project mobilised a number of local businesses and several Milanese institutions whose attention was thus drawn to an area that normally attracts attention for controversial events linked to safety.
