In 2019, Michele De Lucchi and AMDL CIRCLE presented the architectural research entitled Earth Stations Many Hands: a reflection on the need to build contemporary monuments to celebrate handmade objects, craftsmanship as an art form, an exchange between cultures and a means of social inclusion.

Many Hands Make One is one of the possible declinations of this research. The carpet represents the symbol par excellence of vernacular craftsmanship. The carpet is born in the weaving through the choral work of several people and its realization requires a cohesive social group. In many cultures, the very design of the carpet is a representation of the symbols of the families that produced it. The installation designed for Assab One reconstructs, deconstructs and interprets the architectural elements par excellence (doors, windows, roofs, cornices, dormers, porches, chimneys…), juxtaposing the carpets to form what we ideally perceive as the first form of encampment, the home. This filigree architecture, made of roofs and walls suspended without a base, wants to represent the highest homage to craftsmanship: many carpets make a house, many hands make a unit. In order to realize this project, the production of the rugs was commissioned to Jaipur Rugs, a company producing high quality handmade rugs and creator of the Jaipur Rugs Foundation, an organization that has created the largest network of women’s and men’s handicrafts in India. The rugs will become part of Private Production.
