Assab One 2002 – The emerging art generation in Italy

Twenty-four young artists bring their works into a recently closed industrial estate. Each of them was invited to create a new work of art inside this space, which allows for a great diversity of creations and techniques: from the most traditional ones, such as painting and sculpture, to installations, video recordings and performances.

Press release

Assab One takes place in the former GEA (Grafiche Editoriali Ambrosiane) factory, a historic Italian printing company made available by the property. It is an exhibition created thanks to the possibility of using a large area (2500 square meters), the availability of the curators and organizers, and the enthusiasm of 24 young artists, some of them already well known on the international scene, called to create works inspired by this event and this place.
An initiative in which everyone participates without receiving any remuneration, because it is meant to be an opportunity to express themselves, confront each other and dialogue with the Milan of art in a space free of all constraints.

The artists invited to Assab One belong to the generation born in the 1970s. Many of them have been active on the art scene for some time, protagonists of major events, including international ones, both in private galleries and in public spaces. Others are completely unknown, at their first group exhibitions, but with already structured work and strong personalities.
Each of them was proposed to create a new work in a chosen area within this space articulated in very large rooms, but also in small rooms, such as to allow the exhibition of works made with the most diverse techniques, from the most traditional, such as painting and sculpture, to installations, videos and performances.
Assab One becomes for these artists an opportunity for experimentation and confrontation with a place strongly characterized by its architecture and memory, far from the traditional white spaces of the gallery and museum.

The web project

“Now read, then listen to the words of the artists and see images of the installations: who knows what idea will form in your mind from these traces. This web project wants to leave an empty space available for your personal imaginations, because the viewer always participates, because every tool, every prosthesis that allows you to perceive things is an inference that contributes to their invention.” UnDo.Net for Assab One
