In 1951 John Cage composed the Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano: the preparation consisted of a series of everyday metal objects (mostly forks and spoons) placed on the strings of a piano. Fifty years later some everyday objects and a sofa remain.
In Assab One, a sofa “prepared” through the placement of heterogeneous materials, a set of 8 piezoelectric microphones, a guitar and a bass guitar inside it. An actress intervenes according to a defined gestural score. The sounds are processed and mixed live. Three dv-cams connected with another room in which three monitors are housed complete the installation.

Press release

The installation consists of the “preparation” of a sofa operated through the placement of heterogeneous materials, a set of 8 piezoelectric microphones, a guitar and a bass guitar inside it: between structure and fabric, in the interstices and natural cavities. An actress (also skin miked) intervenes on the couch according to a defined gestural score. Sounds are processed (analogically) and mixed live by the authors. Three dv-cams connected with another room in which three monitors are housed complete the installation. Nervous attention to an everyday object is transformed giving rise to a micro-symphony.
