Proto-types. Creating a Printing Shop and Other Improper Tools
Wanted! Improper Tools Wanted
On the desk of those who work with images, now and then, like the rose in Munari’s salad, the surprise of an improper tool still appears. “Improper” are outdated or improvised tools, salvaged, patched up, re-arranged: objects often and willingly nameless, seemingly unaware of technological standards. Yet they have their own special effectiveness. The blog prototipi.blogspot.com was created to explore those delicate, very personal boundaries where the digital does not exhaust the analog, and bricolage makes a comeback. Wanted! Improper Tools Wanted is an invitation to graphic designers, artists, and illustrators to enrich the inventory of all sorts of “improper” tools, from unsuspected tricks to lucky accidents: the tools collected online will be part of the exhibition at Assab One.
Proto Types. Creating a Printing Shop
The book will be presented in the presence of the author, Giovanni Baule, and Giovanni Lussu.
Performance: Types like Roland
In the shadow of the large offset machine Roland Ultra at Assab One, an assembly line of makeshift printing presses will print the first typographic sample of “proto types.” On this occasion, the characters designed by students of the Type Design Advanced Course at the Polytechnic University of Milan will be hand-printed according to the technique described in the book.
Workshop: Improper Tools Workshop with Claude Marzotto
An experimental workshop to try out the typographic self-production techniques proposed in the book Proto Types. Creating a Printing Shop and the collection of tools gathered online on the blog.
